Why?
Why the name? Kategoria is an ancient Greek word meaning ‘accusation’. It’s the opposite of defence (apologia). In this conference we are seeking to prosecute a case—make an argument—about how Christians should live and what the world should look like when it is impacted by the gospel. Kategoria is about the questions Jesus puts to the culture.
Kategoria is a gathering of emerging and experienced Christian leaders who are committed to being biblically faithful, culturally intelligent, and positively engaged for the common good.
Born from the mission of the Lachlan Macquarie Institute, Kategoria brings together leaders from diverse fields to think deeply about Christian leadership and cultural engagement. We are convinced that the gospel of Jesus Christ is not only the hope of individual hearts, but the foundation for human flourishing in communities and societies.
At Kategoria, we soak in Scripture, sharpen each other through fellowship and discussion, and explore how to say and show the gospel in every sphere of life.
Kategoria is unique in the combination of themes and people it draws together. We proceed from the conviction that the gospel of Jesus is what our society needs. This means that core to the calling and training of Christian leaders is the task of equipping each other to say and show the gospel. We are also convinced that when the gospel is heard and takes root in human lives it leads to change in individual lives, communities and societies. A well-equipped Christian leader has a social vision as well as an evangelistic calling. Kategoria takes both dimensions of Christian cultural engagement and leadership seriously.
At Kategoria 2025, we turn our attention to Christian social vision — seeing our world clearly through the lens of the gospel, building communities that reflect God’s purposes, and leading with wisdom and hope. Across politics, business, technology, education, the arts, and more, we will explore what it means to say and show the gospel in a culture hungry for truth, beauty, and justice. Together, we seek to grow as leaders who carry a living vision for human flourishing, rooted in Christ.
